Activity: Mini-Passion Project
All year, many of you have been asking if you can carry out a project into something you are passionate about. Here’s your chance! Over the next two weeks, at home and school, you will carry out research into a subject/project you are passionate about. We will be using the Action research model you have learnt to use this year.
This week, week 1:
1.     Deciding: Discuss your ideas with others around you and narrow down your choices to one thing you are very passionate about and would like to find out more about. Think about:
* What is it exactly I need to know?
* What wil I  do with the information-how will I share it?
*Who is my audience? What do I want them to learn?
* What do I know already?
* What do I need/want to find out? Questions as headings.

2.    Finding out: What skills, resources, information will you need to complete your task and what is the best way for you to learn this  skill? This is the key Learning  phase of the task.
* Where will I find the sort of information that I need?
* What sort of information do I want? Pictures? Diagrams? Facts? Interviews? Opinions?

3.Using  & Recording…
* Keywords to do with your topic.
* Use index and contents page, looking for keywords.
* Scanning for keywords.
* Skim reading for information about your topic.
* Use your questions as headings to organise your notes and diagrams.
* Remember to write sources you’ve used in a bibliography.
e.g. A History of New Zealand, by John Lockyer.

Week 2:
4. Presenting – What do I want it to look like? (Use rubric of ideas)
*  I will turn my questions into headings and my notes into sentences and paragraphs.
* How am I going to pull all this information together and present it so the main points come across clearly?
* How will I share this with my class? (To be ready to share by Friday 7th December 2012).

5. Evaluating
* How did I go?
* Am I satisfied with the result?
* Does it meet the expected criteria? (see rubric for marking)
* Am I happy with the way I got there?
* Do I need better skills to make it easier next time?

~By Week 5, Monday 26th August you are expected to have your speech organized, well practiced and ready to deliver to the class that week.
~Your speech is to be written in your draft writing book, practiced from this.
~ Then make notes to remind you of your speeches’ order and its’ main points put onto cue cards for the speech presentation itself.
~Remember a speech is an organised talk, not reading what you wrote, out loud.
~You need to know a lot about your topic as your speech needs to last between 2.5 and 3.5 minutes long.
That may mean you have to-
~do some research to get information.
~talk to an expert to gain more information or                                              quotes.
2013 TOPICS:
·      Bounce Back…
·      You Have to Agree…
·      It’s A Record!
·      Social Media.
·      I’m In Pain!

~ You can use props, just make sure they back up persuading us to your point of view on your topic.
~ As we will work on your speech at school as well as home, do all your work in the same book – homework or draft. When taking your book home to work on, remember to bring it back to school the next day to use too.

Everyone will present a speech to the class.
One person will be chosen to represent Ngatimoti School in the Y5/6 section and the Y7/8 section of the Motueka District Speech Competition on the 5th September.

Have fun! Here’s some tips to help you:
Yahoo! It’s speech time again!
Getting started is hard... try this.

PLAN          (Have done by next Monday – 12th August)
1. Select your topic – should be done by now, you’ve had the topics for 2 weeks, (Given out as homework Monday week 1).
Look at the options for writing about an issue and choose one you have an interest in or a strong feeling about.
2. What’s the point?
The purpose of this speech is to persuade your audience to agree with your point of view on an issue.
3. Define the topic.
Cut through all the waffle and get to the main idea. What is your main idea? Write it down in your draft book/homework book.

Week 3: Writing the Thing!!!
Collect your ideas - material...Look in books, TV, personal experience, talk to your parents, friends, teachers, get your imagination going.
Organise your info into the following...

1. INTRODUCTION
You need a catchy introduction. You need to “hook” the audience straight away. This could be a joke, a short poem, a question, some action e.g. blowing a whistle like an umpire. The introduction should also also tell us what your main idea, (opinion) is.

2. BODY
Select 3 or 4 good reasons to back your argument and persuade your audience to agree with your opinion. Put them in logical order. Explain your ideas. Give examples, little stories...but don’t try to cover too much, it can confuse your audience.

3. CONCLUSION
This is similar to your introduction. Restate your main idea, (opinion) and finish on a question to challenge your audience. This part is really important - the judges and audience will remember your last words the most, so make sure you are clear and don’t introduce anything new.

Bring your written speech to school this Friday to share with our Buddy Class, Room 4. This is your first chance to practise it on an audience!

Homework Sheet - Due Friday 23rd August Week 4
My day for presenting news is ___________________________
I will be presenting_________________________
Remember to ...
- Learn your spelling words by finding an synonym for them if you can
- Practice doing your maths certificate in 3/5 minutes
-  Read each night for 20 minutes and fill in your Read-Around NZ Reading Log.
- Practice your __ tables/ Practise your Mixed Facts sheet

Week 4 – Practice, Practice, Practise!
Last week you wrote down the speech you are sharing. This week:

1. Write the main points of your speech in sequence, as notes, onto cue cards (small, numbered cards that fit in your hand). This is to help you when practicing your retell this and next week, to keep the order.
You could use numbers, bullets points, hyphens or asterixes to organize them.

By next Friday, (23rd August) make sure you have:
1.  Practiced giving your speech to yourself, using the main points you wrote as reminders of what happens next.

2. Make sure it goes for around 3 minutes at home as you will go faster at school and as a senior student it needs to go between 2.5-3.5minutes.

3. Have practiced giving your speech to others e.g. family members, friends, recorded on a device, (e.g. computer, Ipod), pets, your mirror. This is so you are really comfortable and confident with your speech.

4. Worked on using gestures, facial expression, using pauses for effect, changes in volume, speed and pitch, (all where appropriate) to make your speech more visually and aurally interesting for yourself and your audience.

5. Got your props, (if you are using any) ready and prepared and that you are used to using them in your speech. Know when you need them, they are there to back your speech up and enhance it, not to take over from it.

We will be practicing techniques of speech making at school too, but the more practice you do at home, the better your speech will be and the more confidence and enjoyment you will have in retelling it.:)

Be ready to give your speech from Monday 26th August– if you don’t do it that day, keep practicing until it is your turn. It will be that week. School Speech competitions will be in week 6.

Remember – you’ve done this sort of thing, (prepared talks) every week in news presentation and in class debates both last term and this, so you know you can do it, just put on your beauty queen smile and enjoy your moment to be a star!
